For some people, losing weight remains difficult despite regular exercise, careful calorie counting and consistent healthy habits. Persistent tiredness may also remain unexplained. In such cases, the issue may not be visible on the scale but could be identified through blood tests.

Dr Ahmed Al Alawi, a specialist in genetics and molecular pathology, points to insulin resistance as one possible factor. It occurs when the body’s cells become less responsive to insulin, forcing the pancreas to produce more of the hormone to maintain normal blood sugar levels.

The condition can develop gradually and is associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes. It is also linked to polycystic ovary syndrome, fatty liver disease and cardiovascular problems.

Warning signs can include tiredness after carbohydrate-heavy meals, frequent sugar cravings, difficulty losing abdominal weight and darkened, thickened skin around the neck or underarms.

Tests including fasting blood sugar, fasting insulin, HbA1c and HOMA can help assess the condition, alongside triglycerides and HDL levels.

Regular physical activity, reducing refined sugars and processed starches, adequate sleep and stress management can all support better insulin sensitivity.

For those struggling despite sustained efforts, checking metabolic health may provide another piece of the puzzle.
