Royal Navy Sailor Faces Spy Charges
A 24-year-old is accused of obtaining protected information for an unnamed foreign power.
Royal Navy member Teddy Young faces two charges under the National Security Act.
Police allege he obtained and retained protected information between 2024 and 2025.
Authorities say the case is unrelated to the separate RAF Fairford investigation.
A serving member of the Royal Navy has been charged with national security offences after counter-terrorism police accused him of obtaining protected information for the benefit of an unnamed foreign power.
Teddy Young, 24, from Bedfordshire, was arrested at his home on October 6 and taken into custody in London. The Crown Prosecution Service authorised two charges against him on October 7 under the National Security Act 2023.
Police allege that between November 26, 2024, and May 21, 2025, Young engaged in conduct preparing for the disclosure of protected information.
He is also accused of obtaining, copying, recording or retaining protected information while intending his actions to benefit a foreign power, and allegedly knowing or having reason to know that the conduct could be prejudicial to the safety or interests of the United Kingdom.
The foreign power allegedly involved has not been publicly named by police. Authorities have urged against speculation while legal proceedings continue.
Commander Helen Flanagan, Head of Counter Terrorism Policing London, described the allegations as serious and said investigators had worked closely with the Ministry of Defence to take measures to mitigate any potential security risks.
Young had previously been arrested in May 2025 and was released on bail while the investigation continued. His security clearance was suspended and he was removed from his duties at that time, according to the Associated Press.
Young was remanded in custody and was due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London on October 8.
Police have also stressed that the case is not connected to the separate investigation at RAF Fairford, where seven people have been arrested following suspicious activity near the airbase.
The Royal Navy confirmed that a service member had been charged but said it would not comment further while legal proceedings are ongoing.
The allegations against Young have not been tested in court, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
