Nairobi, Kenya: Kenya has confirmed its first-ever Ebola death after a citizen who recently returned from the Democratic Republic of Congo died in Nairobi, Health Minister Aden Duale announced on Tuesday.

The unnamed patient fell ill in the DRC roughly a month ago, travelling overland through Uganda before flying to Nairobi on October 3, where he subsequently tested positive.

Authorities have identified 28 contacts, including family members and healthcare workers, with only one testing positive so far, as Duale urged the public not to panic.

Marking Kenya's first recorded case, the fatality comes amid an ongoing outbreak in the DRC that has killed thousands across Africa over the past decades.

Health officials emphasised that robust systems are active to mitigate the spread of the virus following the victim's death on Monday night.
