Japan population sees record five-year drop: census

TOKYO: Japan’s population has shrunk by a record margin over the last five years, according to official census data released by the government. The latest demographic figures confirm that the country is grappling with an accelerating population decline, solidifying concerns over its shrinking workforce and the mounting pressure on social security systems.

The drop marks the most substantial contraction recorded within a five-year census period since data collection began. Experts attribute the historic slump to a combination of persistently low birth rates, minimal net immigration, and a steadily climbing mortality rate within one of the world's oldest societies.

Despite various government initiatives designed to encourage marriage and boost childbirth, demographic projections indicate the trend will continue. Policymakers are facing intensified pressure to implement aggressive structural reforms as shrinking regional communities struggle to maintain basic economic stability and essential public services.
