At least 20 people were injured when a locomotive collided with the rear of a Cairo-bound passenger train on Sunday in southern Egypt, authorities confirmed.

The crash marks the second such incident in the country within a month.

The collision occurred in Minya Province, approximately 270 kilometers (168 miles) south of Cairo, according to a statement from Egypt's railway authority.

The impact caused two carriages to derail and plunge into a nearby watercourse.

Emergency services were dispatched to the scene to assist the injured.

Officials have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the crash, with further details expected as the inquiry progresses.
