Brasilia : U.S. President Donald Trump has become an influential figure in Brazil's presidential campaign, with both President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and right-wing challenger Flavio Bolsonaro seeking to benefit from ties with Washington ahead of the October election.

Trump has recently met both candidates, praising his relationship with Lula while also expressing support for Bolsonaro, the son of former president Jair Bolsonaro.

The U.S. decision to classify Brazil's two largest drug gangs as terrorist organisations was welcomed by Bolsonaro's allies, who presented it as a victory for public security. However, proposed U.S. tariffs on some Brazilian products have created tensions with Lula's government.

With polls pointing to a closely contested race, analysts say Trump's actions could influence voters, particularly on issues such as crime, security and trade. Both Lula and Bolsonaro are expected to continue highlighting their respective relationships with the U.S. president as the campaign intensifies.
