PARIS: The French navy, supported by British intelligence, intercepted and detained a suspected Russian oil tanker in international waters over the weekend. Heavily armed commandos rappelled from a military helicopter onto the vessel, identified as the Tagor, approximately 400 nautical miles west of Brittany.

French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed the high-seas operation on Monday, stating the vessel was flying a false Cameroonian flag while transporting crude from Murmansk toward Cameroon.

Authorities verified the flag's irregularities after boarding the ship, which carries a crew of 23. Macron sharply condemned the transit, emphasizing that the evasion of global maritime laws directly funds Russia's war in Ukraine while creating severe ecological threats. The navy is currently escorting the sanctioned tanker to an anchorage point for comprehensive checks.
