PARIS: Deadly wildfires fanned by extreme heat and fierce winds have swept across western Europe, forcing tens of thousands of residents and tourists to evacuate homes and campsites in France, Spain, and Italy.

The tragic crisis has already claimed the lives of three firefighters. Spain declared a state of emergency around Madrid, while France invoked the European Union's civil protection mechanism to secure specialized emergency aircraft.

In southwestern France, over 20,000 holidaymakers fled seaside campsites as flames threatened coastal towns. Meanwhile, thousands of emergency responders in southern Italy battled scores of dangerous blazes across Sicily and Calabria.

Climatologists warn that severe droughts and extreme temperatures topping 40C cause wildfires to spread much faster, destroying cultural heritage and natural environments across affected European regions.

Satellite data confirms the total land burned across European nations this year is the second largest on official record as dedicated crews continue fighting these relentless infernos daily.
