Trump announces 'historic' Hamas disarmament agreement

Washington: U.S. President Donald Trump said that negotiators reached a 'historic' agreement for the complete disarmament of Hamas and other armed factions in Gaza, calling it as a significant step toward ending the conflict and creating lasting peace.

According to Trump, the deal is part of a larger US-supported Gaza peace initiative coordinated by Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey. The proposed plan calls for the planned surrender of Hamas' weapons, the elimination of its tunnel network, the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, the establishment of a new Palestinian technocratic administration, the deployment of an international stabilisation force, and large-scale reconstruction of the territory.

Despite Trump's statement, major obstacles remain. Israeli officials have not openly supported the suggestion and continue to insist on Gaza's complete demilitarisation before any army pullout. Meanwhile, Hamas has stated that disarmament will not occur unless Israel withdraws and the larger political accord is implemented.

Officials said the disarmament process will occur in stages over several months, with international monitoring to ensure compliance. However, continued fighting on the ground, as well as deep mistrust between the sides, make the agreement's future uncertain.
