Let us spread harmony and defeat hate

The terrible shoot out at the two NZ mosques has come as a reminder of the hate and misunderstanding that exists in our midst even in a peaceful country like New Zealand which is known for its tolerance and harmony. And, just like all the major game-changers like the environment and politics, there is no longer the excuse that this is a faraway ‘local’ incident. As a global village bound by instant newsfeeds into our smart phones, every incident of extremism and hate spreads its poison around the world immediately. Just as no incident of terror is too insignificant, I must also say that every word spoken against the phobia of other religions and way of life is  a means of changing the climate of hate that the world seems to be caught up in. In this case, I am so proud of our Kingdom and the vision of our leaders who actively support the freedom of all religions. As one visitor said to me, Bahrain is probably the only country in the world where one could visit a mosque, a temple, a synagogue and a gurudwara within driving/walking distance of each other. We, the people of Bahrain, belong to a small and close-knit community that represents a microcosm of the world and the Bahraini tradition of welcoming all people and sharing ideas and living together in peace is an example for the world to follow. Bahrain certainly punches above its weight when it comes to shining the light of peace upon the world. How can we, as individuals, make a difference? Is change the responsibility of only world leaders and governments? Certainly not. You and I, as ordinary people share a great power to change the world. As individuals, we must raise the banner of peace and love for mankind in all our everyday interactions. We must speak up against discrimination when we see it and not be mute, powerless witnesses. As parents, teachers and caregivers, we must instil the right values in the next generation so that they understand the importance of respect of every human being and their own ability to be the change that this world sorely needs today. Our prayers to the people of New Zealand, the victims and the families of the terrible terrorist attack on the Muslims there. We are with you – may your spirits heal and may God be with you.
