Four Indians accused of buying 47 mobile phones with forged credit cards were yesterday sentenced to jail by the High Criminal Court.
The first accused was sentenced to five years behind bars, while his accomplices received three years behind bars.
The four men, aged 25 to 34, were accused of using forged credit cards to buy 45 Samsung Note 4 and four iPhones from an electronics shop in Tubli in January this year.
The case came to light after police received a tip-off about two people who were about to purchase many mobile phones from an electronics shop at City Centre Bahrain.
A detective told prosecutors, "Police received information about four Indians who were about to purchase 50 mobile phones from an electronics shop in City Centre Bahrain.”
"We sketched a sting operation plan to capture the accused red-handed. Two of them arrived at the shop at 1pm and were about to use their forged credit cards when we captured them,” he added.
During questioning, the two arrested men revealed the identities of their accomplices to police.
According to prosecutors the accused visited the shop in Tubli six times in January to make their purchases.
The detective described the accused as ‘professional fraudsters' who even made online purchases using forged credit cards. He said 18 forged credit cards were found in their possession.
