Save marine life, MPs urge panel

MPs are demanding more official action to protect the marine of the island, it was announced recently. Their demands included imposing more official supervision and regulation of sea sand extraction and random fishing, which “dangerously harm the marine life in Bahrain’s waters.”

This was mentioned in a proposal presented by six MPs to the Public Utilities and Environment Parliamentary Committee earlier this year.

The proposal was studied by the committee for seven months before it was approved. It’s now awaiting the results of voting in the Parliament this week, before it was referred to the Government for further discussion and approval.

The committee said in a report that it had communicated the proposal with several official authorities such as Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry, which is responsible for marine resources in the country, as well as the Supreme Council for Environment.

The report mentioned that the proposal supported the 11th Article of the Kingdom’s Constitution, which stipulates that “all natural resources shall be the property of the State. It shall ensure their preservation and proper utilisation, due regard being given to the requirements of the State’s security and national economy”. The MPs also sought to curb sea sand extraction.
