‘United int’l action vital to overcome terrorism’

The evil of terrorism can only be overcome through truly united international action, said Interior Minister, Lt-General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa as he addressed audience at Bahrain- British Friendship Society, during his visit to the United Kingdom.

Bahrain Ambassador to UK, Fawaz bin Mohammed Al Khalifa, Chairman of the Bahrain-British Friendship Society, Peter Sincock and the State Minister for Middle East Affairs, Tobias Ellwood were present at the occasion.

“Actions are required that recognise the urgency of the situation, and which disrupts and prevents terrorist attacks at the earliest possible stage,” he stated.

He said the threats facing Bahrain today could easily challenge other countries tomorrow. “And as we come to terms with the sickening recent events in Paris, we need – all of us – to have a very clear idea of how we address and solve the problem of terrorism,” he said. The Minister stressed during the speech how much he is concerned about protecting the youth, both from extremism and political violence, and from crime in general, including the use of drugs.

“Extremism is a growing threat to all of us - not just young people. Whether it is religious extremism, which hijacks our faith for political goals – or ideological extremism, which aims to overturn the established political order, there is no doubt that extremism is the root of today’s terrorism,” he stressed.

He highlighted how London is still being used as an external base for terrorist activity and incitement in Bahrain, adding, “But we now have a more experienced and better trained police force and population has more trust and confidence in our security capabilities.”

He did not forget to highlight Bahrain remaining a free and open society, and of how His Majesty’s wide-ranging political and social reforms have supported that vision.
