Subsidy removal under debate: Minister

Scrapping electricity and water subsidies are still under intensive discussion, said Parliament and Information Affairs Minister Isa bin Abdulrahman Al Hammadi here yesterday. He said that “there was a proposal on this issue, but no decision has been made on the issue so far.”

During the post-Cabinet press briefing, Al Hammadi said, “The committee formed to reduce government expenses will soon submit its report to HRH the Premier and it will be discussed by the Cabinet on December 7. The report will be made public afterwards. He added that the committee aimed at cutting down expenses up to 30 per cent.

He highlighted the recent meeting between the relevant parliamentary committee and the Electricity and Water Authority (EWA). He reiterated that “the government’s adopted policy of redirecting subsidies to benefit citizens. This issue is a focal point of the Government Action Plan (GAP).”
