Expert Sport Injury Care at RBH Medical Centre

Sports injuries can occur when one is exercising or engaging in sports. They can happen to anyone whether an occasional athlete or a professional one. They can be in the form of bruises, strains, tears, and broken bones and may occur as a result of overtraining, incorrect warm-up techniques or accidents. If the sports injury is severe or if pain persists, one should consult a physician.

Some of the common injuries include runner’s knee, sprained ankles, meniscus and ACL tears. Runner’s knee occurs as a result of excessive stress on the knee. The kneecap gets irritated which is followed by a swelling, popping or grinding feeling inside the joint. Sprained ankles occur when ligaments are stretched or torn which could happen when playing sports that involve running or jumping such as football or volleyball. Meniscus tears occur when the joint is twisted forcefully tearing the inner cartilage of the knee, and ACL tears occur when there is a twist or dislocation in the ligaments.

An arthroscopy is performed by a surgeon to repair meniscus, ligaments and joints. It allows the surgeon to work on the inflicted area without making big incisions, making it a minimally invasive procedure. The insertion of a small camera aids the surgeon to see the image on the screen which guides the surgeon throughout the operation to look for damaged cartilage to be removed. It is an outpatient surgery and involves less pain when healing.

Dr. Syeed Ahmed Ebrahim, Consultant Orthopedics who has 22 years of experience in arthroscopic sports surgeries and traumatology is available for consultation on Tuesdays at RBH Medical Center, Riffa.  “The number of sports-related injuries is on the rise, and we want to ensure that we are providing the best orthopedic care to injured individuals and athletes.
