Royal University for Women celebrate Women’s Day

Upon the approval of the Higher Education Council of the Kingdom of Bahrain, Royal University for Women celebrated international women’s day with a full program of activities including hosting distinguished guest speakers and the main event which featured a debate between a student delegation from West Virginia University, USA and Royal University for Women students.

The West Virginia University students are visiting RUW and the Kingdom of Bahrain as part of a week-long student exchange program with students from RUW having already visited Morgantown, USA earlier this academic year. The debate between the university students focused on the impact of technology, both negatively and positively on social norms and social interactions.

The debate team of the Royal University for Women consisted of students Asya Bukhowa, Asma Khalifa and Jessica Loraine Suresh. The opposing West Virginia University team included students Madalyn DiGiulian, Lauren Headley and Miriam Demasi.

The discussion focused on the impact of technology on social norms, its impact on social interactions and the aftereffects on the well-being of society. The discussion witnessed a great interaction between the participants with  strong opinions and arguments presented by both sides on the subject matter and its impact on society. Both sides used factual evidence to back up their arguments and countered each other in a disciplined and fair manner.

Students of the West Virginia University focused on the danger of technology regarding formation and building of society, which has become highly affected by a generation who adhere to the virtual world day by day and isolation from the community. WVU students reflected on the preference of the majority to interact virtually and not in a direct face to face manner and how this has altered our social norms.

Reflecting on the event, President of the Royal University for Women, Professor Mazin Jumaah, expressed his appreciation to the participating teams and lauded their debating styles and techniques and expressed his pride in celebrating International Women’s Day stating, “This event, is an ideal opportunity to blend the cultures between the Kingdom of Bahrain and the United States of America, represented by West Virginia University and the presence officials from the US Embassy to take the experience and engage in the experience of the debate.”
