Nabeel Rajab sentenced to five years in prison

LondonBahrain’s High Criminal Court has sentenced Nabeel Rajab to five years in prison after he was found guilty of spreading false rumours aiming to undermine the security of the Kingdom and its allies, a press release said.

Rajab faced criminal charges of promoting, misleading and providing inaccurate information about Bahrain and disseminating rumours at the time of war under Articles 133 of the Penal Code; offending a foreign country under Article 215 of the Penal Code, and insulting a statutory body under Article 216 of the Penal Code.

Rajab is currently serving a two-year prison sentence following the outcome of the second trial in July 2017, which found Rajab guilty of “disseminating false news, statements and rumours about the internal situation of the Kingdom,” under Penal Code 134.
