Bahrain Sports Day kickstarts with Spartan Race

Manama : Sergio Brilligan raced to victory in the Spartan Race, held yesterday as part of the 2018 Bahrain Sports Day.

Nearly 4,000 athletes competed it out in this challenging event, which started from the Bahrain International Circuit in
Sakhir.

In the Spartan Beast race, the highest level of competition, saw more than 500 strong athletes race over 23km and faced30-35 unpredictable terrain and obstacles to test their abilities.

The Russian athlete successfully completed this challenging race first in 1 hour, 50 minutes and 30 seconds. Behind him were compatriot Igor Biloslov (1:51:00) and Charles Franky (1:54:58) of Germany in second and third places, respectively.

In the women’s category, Dora Al Sebaie of Kuwait topped the race in 2 hours and 18.15 minutes. French Angelica Tshitano 2:36:15 was second and UAE-resident Evana third (2:36:25).

In the 14-16 age category race, Bernard Donovan raced to victory. George Crowie topped the 25-29 category race, while Abdulaziz Khamis clinched victory in the 30-39 category race. The 40-49 race was won by Chat Zilativ while Francis Donovan topped the 50+ race.

The women’s 25-29 race saw Barbra Company win first place, Elissa Novotny claimed victory in the 39-39 race, the 40-40 race was won by Tina Ormes.

There are two more spartan races that involves different age and physical ability athletes, both of which will take place today.

Kicking off the second day action will be a 5-km Spartan Sprint with 1,500 athletes to battle for victory. This will be followed by a 1km Spartan Kids race, in which 500 kids aged from 4 to 14 years are expected to race.

The Spartan races are the first set of activities lined up by the Bahrain Olympic Committee, in preparation for the 2018 Bahrain Sports Day on February 13. 

This year’s edition of the Bahrain Sports Day will cover all of Bahrain with ministries, in addition to other government and private sector authorities bringing their own sport activities to contribute to the event.
