Gold rush continues

Manama Bahrain yesterday made another solid show at the fourth edition of the Arab Women Sports Tournament (AWST), being held in Sharjah.

On the sixth day of the tournament, the nationals hit strong winning seven medals, including 3 gold, 1 silver and 3 bronze, in shooting, athletics and table tennis events.

Mouza Abdulrahim opened Bahrain’s medal account of the day, taking home the 25m pistol shooting event gold medal, her second gold medal in the tournament, having won the 10m air pistol early on.

The Bahraini shooter scored 21 points to secure the title, just four points ahead of compatriot Aisha Al Buraiki, who won second place and with it the silver medal.

The results gave Bahrain the overall crown in the shooting championship with eighth medals in total, including five gold and three silver.

In athletics, Bahrain added two more gold and bronze medals to wrap up the day’s success. Hajer Al Amiri, who took the 100m gold, was again at peak form last night to top the 200m race in 25.31 seconds. She was followed by compatriot Zainab Abdulhussain (27.94) in third place, while the silver went to Algeria’s Sima Wanis (27.10).

Marta Hirtuba followed suit, racing to 1,500m victory in 4:38.63, finishing ahead of runner-up Abeer Faris (4:47.42) of Algeria and third-placer Kuwaiti Amal Al Rumi (4:58.99).

Late on, Amina Mubarak came third in the shot put scoring 29.22 metres to give Bahrain the bronze. Duha Al Sinawi (34.87) of Oman took the gold, followed by Kuwaiti Maryam Al Anazi (34.26).

Following the finals, Bahrain chef de mission Shaikha Hayat bint Abdulaziz Al Khalifa congratulated the team members at the awarding ceremony.

Elsewhere, Bahrain Club secured the table tennis bronze medal after a 3-1 win over Sharjah Club yesterday. Sharjah started the tie well and took the first match as Bahrain’s Maryam Al Blooshi lost her opener to Maisa Nader 2-0 (11-9, 9-11, 8-11, 11-3, 9-11).

But Bahrain Club hit back through Maryam Al Qassmi, who defeated Noora Al Mazmi 3-0 (11-5, 11-7, 11-5). Hessa Al Zayani made it 2-1 for Bahrain Club thanks to a 3-0 (11-1, 11-2, 11-1) win over Hessa Al Mazrooi.

The deciding game saw Maryam Al Qasmi ease past Maisa Nader 3-0 (11-7, 11-5, 11-8). The doubles and singles events will take place today.

Meanwhile, the Youth and Sports Ministry team suffered their first defeat in the basketball tournament. The Bahrainis lost to Egypt’s Sporting Club 89-96 in a neck-and-neck match. The Egyptians maintain their solid lead with eighth points, while Bahrain went down to second with 7 points.

In volleyball, Muharraq Club were handed their third defeat, this time at the hands of Morocco 2-3 (23-25, 22-25, 25-22, 25-22, 12-25) in a closely-contested match. The Bahrainis stayed on two points from four matches and now have two matches in hand against Sohar Club of Oman and Kuwait Girls Club.
