Bahrain Bayan School wins  Zayed Future Energy Prize  

ManamaBayan School of Bahrain has won the Zayed Future Energy Prize in the Global High School-Asia category.  The prestigious Zayed Future Energy Award comes part of the Abu Dhabi Sustainability week, marking the 100th year since the birth of the UAE’s founding father and his vision on sustainable energy as well as the 10th anniversary of the distinguished award.

Bayan School of Bahrain represented by its Board of Directors and its executive and educational bodies, dedicated the prestigious award to the Kingdom of Bahrain, the leadership under His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, Prime Minister HRH Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and First Deputy Prime Minister HRH Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa and HRH Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa. 

“This victory represents the Kingdom’s vision in maintaining a sustainable future built on the motivations and aspirations of the youth of tomorrow,” said School Chairperson Shaikha Dr May bint Sulaiman Al Otaibi highlighting the importance of this prestigious award to the Kingdom of Bahrain. “This accomplishment is a true accolade of the vision of the Kingdom’s Leadership and the values that Bayan School embodies in nurturing leaders rooted in heritage and value.” 

The school emerged victorious in the Global High School – Asia Category beating strong competition from China, India and the Philippines.

Bayan school has the honour to represent Bahrain to a global audience of industry leaders and global policy makers in the field of sustainable energy and green technology. 

The prize money is worth US$100,000 to cover at least 80% of the value of the project as a whole. 

This colossal win follows the school’s participation as part of 1,800 projects from across the globe. 

-Project Ecolab360-

The Bayan School Ecolab360 project was announced as the finalist last October and since then have worked relentlessly in ensuring that their message of sustainability reaches the community. 

The Ecoboosters team comprised of students who dedicated their summer to make this win a reality. The team: Aya bint Hisham Al Khalifa, Mariam Nasir, Abdullah Al Majid, Zainab Al Daisi, Jood Al Shirawi, Zain Ali, Haya Mahmoud, Ali Al Mandil, Noura Bani Hammad, Zainab Khalaf and Zain Al Balushi.

The Ecoboosters also extend their gratitude to the leaders of the UAE for being at the forefront of sustainable development among the region and for instituting this prize as it gives youth around the globe the impetus to make dreams of a long-term sustainable future a reality, while putting words into action with the various initiatives that the youth can adopt. 

The Zayed Future Energy Prize was formulated as a result of the vision of the late Ruler of Abu Dhabi and Founding Father of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. With a mind towards ensuring that the Prize reaches out to the different key players in the industry; The Prize is awarded annually to A Large Corporation, A Small and Medium Enterprise, A Non-Profit Organization, a Lifetime Achievement recipient and up to 5 High Schools from 5 different world regions. 

By winning the Zayed Future Energy Prize, the school intends to develop a learning platform called EcoLab 360. The platform is to educate students and the surrounding community on sustainable practices and technologies by focusing on the five R’s; Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Raise awareness, and Renewable energy.

The project will include a 50kW solar PV system, 1kW wind turbine, a 25kW/192kWh battery storage system, a greywater recycling system (25-30k litres/month) and food waste recycling (6 tons/year). 

Total cost $123,000

The total cost projection is $123,000, of which the school will cover $24,600. The school’s students have conducted detailed feasibility studies and expect that the school will save approximately $6,500/year on electricity bills after implementing the project. In addition to being a source of inspiration for other schools to model, the main benefits of the project will be educational.

A significant achievement: HRH CP

His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and First Deputy Prime Minister extended his congratulations to Bahrain Bayan School, for winning the Zayed Future Energy Prize (ZFEP).

The success, Prince Salman said, represents a significant achievement for the school and “a reflection of the Kingdom’s commitment, under the leadership of HM King Hamad, to develop and encourage excellence in Bahrain’s education sector”. 

HRH the Crown Prince went on to commend the school’s staff, students and parents for developing such a successful initiative, noting that the school’s work “reflects the principles of sustainability and competitiveness driving the nation’s development”.

His Royal Highness the Crown Prince extended his best wishes to Dr Shaikha May bint Sulaiman Al Otaibi, the Chairperson of the Bahrain Bayan School Board of Directors, noting that the award represents a significant achievement for the school.
