Reduce emission of green house gases: Oil Minister

Manama : Bahrain’s Oil Minister yesterday said it is imperative for all countries including Bahrain to make commitments and initiatives to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases by the year 2020.

“The Paris agreement needs to be adjusted to bring down the rate of warming earth to not exceed 1.5°C,” Shaikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Khalifa said stressing that the National Oil and Gas Authority is keen on reducing greenhouse gas emissions in various sectors.

The 2015 Paris agreement was signed by 176 countries, including Bahrain.

The authority, the Minister said, exerts great importance on the subject of climate change, especially in view of the fact that oil is one of the sectors most affected by climate change.

The Minister was speaking on the occasion of the World Refining Association selecting Bahrain to introduce a series of Middle East Refining Technology Conference (MERTC) for the second time.

Organised in collaboration with the National Oil and Gas Authority, the event will see the participation of experts, specialists, and managers from the field of oil refining, as well as those interested in the field of refining technology from the technical and research and academic institutions.

More than 40 global experts and specialists are expected to speak on topics including refining, carbon emission, plans for growth, investment strategies as well as opportunities in refining and petrochemicals.
