Boosting ties

Manama His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince Deputy Supreme Commander and First Deputy Prime Minister, yesterday held talks with Rahul Gandhi, who is on his first foreign trip after becoming the chief of Indian National Congress party, on improving bilateral ties. 

“Had a good meeting with Crown Prince of Bahrain, HRH Shaikh Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa. We discussed a variety of issues of interest to India and Bahrain,” Rahul Gandhi, who is in Bahrain as a state guest, said in a tweet.

Talks, held at Gudaibiya Palace, focused on areas of shared interest, in particular the importance of strengthening long-term development and fiscal security across the region and increasing productivity and employment opportunities for youth.

HRH the Crown Prince and the President of India’s National Congress Party highlighted Bahrain’s innovative labour market, which enables the Indian community in the Kingdom to continue making positive contributions to Bahrain’s long-term development. 

Gandhi’s visit is part of his interactions with Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs). Delegates from 50 countries are participating in the event.

Later in the day, Rahul Gandhi held discussions with Foreign Minister Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Khalifa, who was also present during the meeting with HRH the Crown Prince.

The Foreign Minister congratulated Rahul Gandhi on winning the presidency of the Indian National Congress Party. 

The Minister praised the progress of the longstanding bilateral relations, pointing out the important role of the Indian community in promoting Bahrain’s economy. 

Rahul Gandhi expressed delight in visiting Bahrain affirming India’s keenness to further develop the bilateral relations in various fields. 

The Minister then hosted a lunch banquet in honour of Rahul Gandhi and the accompanying delegation.

“Thank you, Your Excellency, Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, honourable Foreign Minister of Kingdom of Bahrain for being a gracious host at lunch today,” Gandhi tweeted after the luncheon meeting.
