Keep updated to remain in graphic designing: US artist

Manama“Whatever was done one hour ago is old, now it’s your turn”, Dr. Jorge Montero said during the three-day workshop at the University of Bahrain organized in collaboration with the U.S. Embassy in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

The three workshops were conducted at the University of Bahrain. The topics included digital lettering, package design and poster design. Montero also talked about his own work as graphic designer, illustrator and fine artist and also about how to live a life as visual communicator with passion and social responsibility. He says the students who attended the workshops were shaken by the topics and were having a keen interest in it. Though he was given only very few hours to cover up the topic each day he utilized his time to the maximum.

During an interview with DT, he said that the main problem with this field is that, people try to steal ideas from the internet; no one is really putting their heart and soul into it. No one is passionate enough to use their imagination and creative; they only make use of their memory.

“Graphic designing as a word is only in the mind; it’s all about visual experience. It focuses more on feeling, designing and perceiving their experience, the whole emotion of the user from the very beginning to the end.” He says it’s very important to stay updated in this field in order to give your services according to what your client wants and desires. It’s important to keep a kind of interactive relationship with your client.

When asked about his inspiration to this field he replied, ”Actually I feel the opposite, this field chose me.” Just like any other person in the designing field he also has been drawing for his entire life and has made it part of his life. He started his career as an illustrator and also got a chance to work with a famous illustrator from Chile, who was his first teacher. After working with him for five years, he started working in designing agencies as a freelancer and at the same time studying illustration. After ten years he completed his undergraduate studies, graduating in graphic designing and drawing from the University of Iowa.  He always wanted to open his own studio to continue his passion in his own space. He is the current founder and director of Grahfica, a visual communication studio, which he is running with his daughter who helps him with the financial side.

“I think what I really like in this field, is the social responsibility it has. I believe it has a positive effect on the society. If you have an urge to make the society better I think this is a good field because it has a visual communication with the people,” he said.
