Four major fires broke out in Bahrain in 2017

ManamaA total of 328 civil defense personnel were called in to put out four of the biggest fires that broke out during 2017, according to senior civil defense officials.

“Year 2017 saw huge fires,” said Captain Hamad Swar, Head of Emergency Planning Division of the Directorate. 

In an interview with DT News, Captain Swar and First LTA Rashed Abdulrehman Obaidli explained that hard work, good equipment and bravery of the firemen helped successfully tackle several fires that broke out during the year.

“We have faced and fought a very large number of incidents in the past year, most important of them were: Intercol warehouse fire (21/3/2017); Intercol warehouse fire (3/10/2017); Deeko fire (Sitra Industrial Area) – (8/4/2017); and  Buri Pipeline blast (10/11/2017),” he said. He explained that each incident required around 20 vehicles.

The General Directory of Civil Defence has three female officers, two female engineers and 45 female staff, he said.

Lieutenant Obaidli said that the role of Bahraini women in civil defense have been invaluable.

 “The women work in the administration to ensure protection and safety issues. They prepare programmes for individuals and groups, such as mothers, children’s, teachers etc. to raise the awareness of safety and protection of themselves and others. Their work has been acknowledged tremendously over the past years by the higher ranks and also by the civilians,” he said.

Bahrain has 13 Civil Defence stations. One temporary Civil Defence station operate in camping season. There are around 900 firefighters and around 146 operational fire and rescue appliances apart from the 136 clerical and support staff at the directorate. The interior Ministry will be marking Bahrain Police Day tomorrow.

4. Buri Pipeline blast (10/11/2017) 19 Vehicles   -   17 Officers   -  82 Firemen
