The day will come when you can buy car for free
Manama : Cars could be bought without paying any cash in future, as companies will start selling vehicles in exchange for buyers ‘data’, Nicolas Olivier, an autonomous car expert, told DT News.
“The companies have already started working on the concept called ‘The Zero Dollar Car’,” he said.
The concept, Oliver said, works by selling autonomous cars in exchange for the buyers data instead of money. “The buyer does not have to spend any money to obtain the car. But it is also not free, instead of money, he must share location information.”
“The data would consist mainly of where the drive goes shopping, eat or spend time, which the car would collect and send to the car company,” he added.
He explained that the data may be “sold to advertisers” who can then use it to target and influence buyers.
“Many companies have already started working on the concept,” he said adding: “‘Zero Dollar Car’ will debut as the autonomous cars hit the market.”
When asked about a possible timeframe, he told us that “it would take twelve years” for the autonomous cars to replace traditional cars. “There are 1.2 billion cars on the road today and the world is capable of producing 100 million cars a year. So if we want to remove all the cars on the roads today it will take at least twelve years,” he explained.
There are other challenges as well, he said adding: “The mix between human-driven cars and autonomous cars will produce a very challenging environment.”
He, however, said that the scarcity of lithium batteries will be solved soon. “I have lived in Hong Kong and China for twelve years and I can tell you that big cities are currently building massive battery factories,” he said.
