Man robs his granny of BD26,000 to throw parties, gets six years in jail

Manama :  A Bahraini man has been jailed for six years for stealing over BD26,000 from his sick grandmother to finance lavish parties and shopping sprees.

However, his accomplice was given a much lighter sentence by the Third Lower Criminal Court. He was given a one-year jail term.

Both were charged with stealing money and gold from the grandmother of the accused, while she was in hospital for Sickle Cell Anaemia treatment.

The Public Prosecution had requested the court to apply tougher punishment against the main accused as he committed the same crime more than once.

Police said this is the second time the main accused has been caught for stealing from his grandmother. The investigation discovered that he stole over BD23,000 in cash and some gold from his grandmother.  However, he escaped punishment the first time after his grandmother pleaded before the court to “forgive her grandson”.

He, however, decided to steal again from her, when she was admitted to the Salmaniya Medical Complex.

Police said the accused stole around BD6,000 and more gold in his second attempt.

During interrogation, he confessed to investigators that he stole the money by breaking his grandmother’s safe with the help of another man.

Police found that the gold was sold at different jewellery shops in Manama. Using the money, the accused then rented a furnished apartment in Juffair and repeatedly invited his friends to lavish hotel parties.

The Public Prosecution charged the man with burglary based on Article 380 of the Kingdom’s Penal Code, which stipulates doubling the penalty in cases that include repetition of crimes or committing more than one at the same time. The man also had several felonies on his criminal record that included robbery and inciting against the regime.
