Shura Council passes Unified Family Law

ManamaShura Council members passed a draft law to issue the Unified Family Law during an extraordinary session held here yesterday.

The Council approved unanimously (29 out of 40 members) the draft law and the amendments introduced to it, a week after it was urgently referred to it from the second branch of the Legislative Authority, the House of Representatives. During the session, Shura Council Speaker Ali Al Saleh highlighted the importance of the enhanced law and its positive impact on the unity of Bahraini families. He told council members that their votes will “stop those who attempt to spread sectarianism among the Bahraini society”.

The draft law consists of 141 articles that tackled engagements, marriages, divorces, custody of children and other family affairs in both the Sunni and Jaafari sects.

All cases in Sharia courts of both sects will be looked into in accordance with the new law. The Law was ratified by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa yesterday .
