No leniency for varsities breaking rules: Ministry

ManamaEducation Ministry yesterday rebuffed the allegation of a private university that a final warning issued recently by the ministry was “surprising”.

“Kingdom University was warned about its violations since June 14”, and that “issuing a final warning against it is justified,” said the Ministry in a press statement.

The statement conveyed that the Higher Education Council in the Ministry will not be lenient on universities or institutes violating norms.

Clarifying more on the violations at the university, the Ministry said that the fire exits in the university were blocked by objects and cars, and that the emergency assembly point was not big enough to accommodate students and staff in case of any emergency.

“Random storage in the corridors and turning the guard’s room into a warehouse is also among the violations the university was notified about,” the Ministry’s statement mentioned.

As reported last week, the Education Ministry issued a final warning against Kingdom University that it would be closed if it doesn’t rectify its violations within seven days.

The Ministry’s statement came following a spokesperson of the university told a local daily that the university was surprised to receive a final warning from the Ministry. A matter that the Ministry rejected.

“This warning comes within the responsibilities of the Higher Education Council General Secretariat to ensure students’ safety and to provide them with the appropriate educational environment,” the Ministry had said earlier.
