Hope for domestic workers

ManamaRecruitment of housemaids will be carried out by a government-owned company if a parliamentary proposal is passed.

The House of Representatives will put the proposal to vote on Tuesday which, if passed, will make the recruitment of domestic workers through a special government-owned company and end the monopoly of private recruitment agencies in the Kingdom.

The measure is expected to bring transparency and accountability and put an end to the exploitation of domestic workers by recruitment agents.

As per the proposal, the Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) will supervise the recruitment process of the company.

LMRA, however, has informed the MPs that the proposal should be reconsidered as it does not come within LMRA’s regular responsibilities.

The Industry, Commerce and Tourism Ministry also did not agree to the proposal, mentioning in a letter addressed to MPs that the proposal was not within the ministry’s specialisations.

The proposal will be discussed and voted during the upcoming regular meeting of the House of Representatives on Tuesday, in the presence of officials of the LMRA and the Ministry.
