Bahrain marks Eid al-Fitr

ManamaBahrain yesterday announced Sunday as the first day of Eid al-Fitr, marking the end of the Holy Month of Ramadan. 

The announcement was made by Bahrain’s moon-sighting committee. All ministries and public institutions will be closed for three days on account of the auspicious occasion. 

Saudi Arabia, UAE and other Arab countries also declared today as the first day of Eid al-Fitr. 

The authorities in Saudi said in a statement carried by the official Saudi Press Agency that the new moon had been sighted, marking the end of the month of fasting. News agencies in the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait also announced that Sunday will mark the beginning of Eid al-Fitr.

Oman, however, has not sighted the moon and has declared Monday as the first day of Eid al-Fitr. 

Ramadan, the ninth month of the lunar-based Hijri calendar, started on May 27 this year. Eid or Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan and the beginning of the next month, Shawwal. Eid begins when the first new moon is seen in the sky.

According to reports, Bangladesh, Pakistan, India will be sighting the moon on Sunday.

Greetings exchanged

Marking the advent of Eid al-Fitr, His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa exchanged greetings with His Royal Highness Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa and His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and First Deputy Premier. HRH the Premier and HRH the Crown Prince also exchanged cables of congratulations.

King greets GCC leaders

His Majesty held phone calls with Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud, the Amir of Kuwait Shaikh Sabah Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Dubai Ruler Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, King Abdulla bin Al-Hussein II of Jordan, Egyptian President Abdul Fattah el-Sisi, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and UAE Armed Forces Deputy Supreme Commander Shaikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan and Al-Azhar Grand Imam Dr. Ahmed al-Tayyib marking the advent of Eid al-Fitr.

King Hamad also held congratulatory calls with Saudi Crown Prince, Deputy Premier and Defence Minister Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud, Kuwait Crown Prince Shaikh Nawaf Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and Tabuk Province Governor Prince Fahd bin Sultan bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud. They exchanged Eid greetings, praying to the Almighty to bless Bahrain as well as the Arab and Islamic nations with progress and prosperity.

Cables of congrats

His Majesty also received cables of congratulations, marking the advent of Eid from senior members of the Royal Family. His Majesty was  congratulated by Council of Representatives Speaker, Shura Council Chairman, Ministers, MPs, Shura Council members, Municipal Councillors, Governors, Bahraini Ambassadors abroad, heads of diplomatic missions accredited to Bahrain, Chairmen of associations, federations, Sport clubs and citizens.

King Hamad and HRH the Premier and HRH the Crown Prince also received cables of congratulations from National Guard Chief Lieutenant-General Shaikh Mohammed bin Isa Al-Khalifa, Rashid Equestrian and Horseracing Club Chairman Shaikh Abdulla bin Isa Al-Khalifa and Royal Court Affairs Minister Shaikh Ali bin Isa Al-Khalifa.
