Imports of foodstuffs to increase during Ramadan

ManamaAgriculture and Marine Resources Affairs in Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry yesterday announced that it has increased the imports of various foodstuff including vegetables and frozen meat and poultry to deal with the increasing demand during the Holy month.

A statement was issued yesterday, confirming that permits have been issued to import around 100,000 tonnes of vegetables, 120,000 tonnes of frozen meat and poultry and 40,000 heads of live cattle.

The statement said that the ministry has taken measures to reduce the price of various commodities in cooperation with local traders and has established a market for dates for the first time in Bahrain.

Temporary public abattoirs have also been opened to cope with the high demand for fresh meat.

“Specialised teams were tasked to monitor local markets and ensure the quality and safety of food products imported and displayed in it,” the statement added.

Agriculture and Marine Resources Undersecretary Shaikh Khalifa bin Isa Al Khalifa assured citizens and residents that all food commodities are available in local markets to meet the increasing demand during Ramadan.

He confirmed that prices have been reduced by 30 per cent as per an initiative launched by the ministry to reduce burdens on consumers and provide quality products.
