Top honour for Abbas

ManamaHis Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa yesterday bestowed Palestine President Mahmoud Abbas with the ‘Order of Al-Khalifa’ in appreciation of his efforts defending Arab causes to achieve just and comprehensive peace in the region. 

His Majesty also stressed Bahrain’s full support for the Palestinian cause to establish an independent state with Jerusalem as its capital. 

“The strong fraternal ties bonding the Bahraini and Palestinian people will remain the basis of our distinguished partnership and human march toward achieving values of peace, tolerance and justice,” said King Hamad.

HM the King said this while receiving Mahmoud Abbas and his accompanying delegation in the presence of His Royal Highness Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa at Sakhir Palace. 

King Hamad also held discussions with the visiting Palestinian delegation on topics including the latest Arab and Palestinian developments, as well as the regional and international updates.

On the occasion, the Palestinian President bestowed on HM the King ‘The Grand Medal of Palestine’ in acknowledgement of his role in boosting the Bahraini-Palestinian relations and supportive stances toward the Palestinian people and just cause. 

The Palestinian President, in his speech, took pride in the Order of Al-Khalifa, which is, he said, an honourable appreciation of HM the King and Bahraini people to Palestine and its people.

He emphasised rejection of foreign interference in Bahrain’s internal affairs, praising Bahrain as a country of coexistence, harmony and peace. 

On the two-state solution with East Al Quds as its capital, Mahmoud Abbas said negotiations are ongoing with the United States, European Union, Russia and other parties to reach a solution that guarantees the Palestinian people’s freedom, independence on the basis of the 2002 Arab peace initiative.

He underscored determination to establish the rule of law and achieving the national reconciliation in conformity with the outcomes of Cairo and Doha meetings leading to the formation of a national unity government and conducting general elections. 

He added that a special committee has been formed to urge Hamas to halt their recent decision, asserting Gaza is part of Palestine.

HM the King hosted a dinner banquet in honour of the Palestinian President and the accompanying delegation. A mission of honour was formed chaired by Minister of Information Affairs Ali bin Mohammed Al Rumaihi.

The Palestinian leader also visited the National Charter Monument, accompanied by Foreign Minister Riyadh Al-Malki, Head of the Mission of Honour, Information Minister Ali bin Mohammed Al-Rumaihi, senior Palestinian officials, and ambassadors taking part in the diplomats’ conference.

President Abbas and the other officials and diplomats were received at the National Action Charter Monument by Education Minister Dr Majid Al-Nuaimi.
