Life sentence for Bahraini mother’s killer
Manama : A man who shot dead a Bahraini mother before her six-year-old son last December was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Military Court yesterday.
The 34-year-old Bahraini military personnel had turned himself on the same day of committing the horrific crime on NoonAvenue in Riffa on December 23.
“The Bahrain Defence Force (BDF) Grand Military Court found him guilty and ordered the seizure of the firearm and ammunition,” Military Judiciary Chief Brigadier Dr Youssef Rashid Flaifel said in a statement issued yesterday.
Dr Flaifel said, “The court convicted the defendant of murder under Article 2/333 of the 1976 Penal Code and unauthorised possession of a firearm and ammunition under Article 7, Paragraph 1, items A,11, (18 / 2 and 4) and (1/22) of the Law on Explosives, Arms and Ammunition of 1976.”
The official said that “all the court-martial sessions were expeditious, flexible and ensured all the judicial guarantees in accordance with the applicable laws”.
“The public hearing sessions were convened in the presence of the families of the defendant and the victim, along with a large attendance of other civilians,” he said.
According to Dr Flaifel’s statement, “The court reviewed all the evidence and technical reports and heard testimonies of witnesses and the coroner. The defendant had a full chance to defend himself and provide all rebuttal evidence through his lawyer.”
The Military Judiciary Chief affirmed the right of the convict and the military prosecution to challenge the verdict before the High Military Court of Appeals, and then refer the case to the High Military Court of Cassation as per the appellate procedures.
As reported earlier, 28-year-old Eman Salehi was shot in the head while she was driving her vehicle accompanied by her six-year-old son in Riffa area.
Witnesses informed back then that the killer removed her body from the car, leaving her lying on the asphalt, before fleeing the scene. However, he turned himself in on the same night. The victim was buried two days later in Muharraq Graveyard.
