Manama : Two female doctors accused of causing the death of a 12-year-old girl due to medical negligence have been sentenced to six months in prison each.

The court, in a separate ruling also suspended their prison sentences for three years.

Fatima Ali Ghuloom, died at the Salmaniya Medical Complex as a result of a medical malpractice resulting in total brain damage.

The girl was diagnosed with polycystic ovaries by the second defendant who instructed for her operation. According to court files, the first defendant who was a trainee, wrongly inserted the anaesthesia tube into her oesophagus instead of her trachea, resulting in damaging the brain of the child.

The second defendant who was supposed to supervise the first defendant in the theatre room is also accused of leaving the child alone with the trainee.

Fatima slipped into a coma for two weeks and died later. The parents of the child then sued the doctors for medical negligence.
