BBK Tennis: Zhang clinches singles title

Manama : Manni Zhang from China clinched the Girls 18 years and under title after she defeated Indian opponent Aleina Alex 6-3, 6-2 on the eighth day of the 22nd Bank of Bahrain and Kuwait (BBK) Juniors Open Tennis Championship 2017 at the Bahrain Tennis Club (BTC) premises in Juffair.

The opening set began with Aleina winning the third game for the first break and an early 2-1 lead and extended it to 3-1 in the next.

Manni though came back strongly and won five games on the trot including breaks in the sixth and eighth of the set.

The second set saw the first three games go with serve and then Manni secured a break in the fourth game to lead 3-1.

Aleina by this stage was struggling with her serve and returns and Manni took advantage to race into a 5-2 lead and then secured the set and title with a break in the eighth game.

In the Unisex 10 years and under, top seed Tristan Manners knocked out Isa Sarwani 6-2 games in the quarter finals and then beat Isa Al Qattan 6-3 in the semi-final to advance to Tuesday’s final against second seed Rushikesh Sonawane who won 6-5 against Maro Ugarkovic in the quarter finals and 6-2 with Essam Janahi in the semi-finals.

The Unisex 8 years and under finalists for Tuesday have also been decided, top seed Riyaan Ahmed beat Arseniy Tsiolta 4-0 games in the quarter finals and then knocked out Lucy Thate 4-1 in the semi-final.

Riyaan will meet second seed Joshua Jacob who was a 4-0 winner against Chloe Elkara in the quarter finals and then fought hard to win 4-3 against Raksha Bharathi.

The championship is being held under the patronage of BBK Chief Executive Officer, Reyadh Yousif Sater and around 60 players have competed in the five main singles events - Boys U12 years, U14 and U18 years and under and Girls 14 years and under and U18 which continues until Tuesday, while 90 players have competed in the two Unisex categories.
