Online child abuse: Man arrested

ManamaA man has been arrested in Bahrain on suspicion of circulating obscene children contents online, the Cyber Crime Directorate announced yesterday in a statement, adding that the case will be referred to Public Prosecution for further action.

The man, whose identity is not disclosed, was arrested after Interpol alerted the directorate to several obscene contents circulating on various social media platforms here.

Interpol traced the contents’ origin to Bahrain, while responding to an abuse complaint filed in a foreign country by a victim. (Details withheld)

Based on the tip-off, the suspect was identified and summoned by the authorities here.

The probe revealed that the man was distributing such contents both inside and outside Bahrain. He was circulating such contents among other online users, randomly, while asking them for similar photos in return.

The man could face up to two years imprisonment and a fine of up to BD10000, if found guilty.

While calling upon parents to monitor the internet use of their children to protect them from exploitation, the General Director of Anti-corruption and Economic and Electronic Security said that legal proceedings are being taken to refer the case to the Public Prosecution.
