Bahrain joins UAE and France to protect cultural heritage
Abu Dhabi : Bahrain has joined hands with UAE and France in establishing an international partnership to protect cultural heritage during armed conflicts.
Supreme Council for Youth & Sport Chairman, Bahrain Olympic Committee President & Royal Charity Organisation (RCO) Chairman HH Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa made the statements while participating in the ‘Safeguarding Endangered Cultural Heritage’ Conference held here.
“The nations’ heritage embodies their arts, culture and architecture, but the continuing destruction of these treasures in areas witnessing armed conflicts will deny us as well as the next generations valuable resources. All nations must work together towards preserving and protecting them from destruction, extinction and plunder by anti-civilisation individuals and groups,”Shaikh Nasser said.
During the UNESCO-sponsored conference, attended by 40 world leaders, Abu Dhabi Shaikh Crown Prince and UAE Armed Forces Deputy Supreme Commander Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan along with French President Francois Hollande launched an initiative to establish an international partnership aimed to protect cultural heritage during armed conflicts.
Shaikh Naseer who attended the conference on behalf of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa stressed that the Kingdom under the leadership of King Hamad has paid tremendous attention to preserve and protect international heritage as it represents a historical symbol of human civilisation.
The event concluded by agreeing to launch an international network to provide haven for endangered heritage sites, and stressed on the need of joint efforts to protect assets at all times.
The conference also agreed to launch an international fund financed by public and private sectors to sponsor programmes aimed at protecting cultural heritage.
The UNESCO-sponsored conference, was the first of its kind at an international level.
