Man’s prison term reduced in physical assault case

ManamaThe Supreme Appeals Court has reduced the jail term of a man convicted of attacking his wife and snatching her bag. The defendant was earlier sentenced to three years in prison, and his sentence has been reduced to one year.

The incident that led to the case happened in front of the High Shariat Court, after the hearing of a divorce case filed by the 29-year-old woman against her husband.

She claimed that after the hearing, the 39-year-old defendant had knocked her down and grabbed her hair before pushing her down
again. “After the court hearing, I hurried to my car because
I knew he (the defendant) would follow me. But I got stunned when I saw his car parked beside mine,” the woman explained to the prosecutors.

“As I was about to get inside my car, he stepped out his vehicle and knocked me down and grabbed my hair. He pulled my handbag, I resisted and I kept trying to protect it. I knew that he wanted to steal it, but eventually I felt a severe pain in my hand so I opened my hand,” she added.

The handbag contained BD190. Court files show that the victim said that she has already filed another complaint against him for stealing another handbag from her, which was containing BD450.

The defendant is claimed to be jobless and was relying on his wife for living.

“After 10 years of marriage, I got tired of him and my life was slipping from bad to worst because of his treatment. He had always lived from robbing me because he was jobless,” she pointed out.
