Saudi robbed in Mumbai- gang arrested

Four key members of a crime ring that focused in robbing foreign tourists, especially Saudi nationals, were arrested by the Mumbai Police, according to Arab News report.

The leader of the gang, who was also arrested, was named in over 40 theft cases, the report added.

According to the report, the arrests follow the mugging of 70-year-old Saudi national Hussain Ali Mubarak, who arrived in Mumbai on Aug. 4 and the following day he visited top tourist spots. After taking dinner at a popular restaurant, he hailed a taxi to go back to his hotel. The cab driver suddenly changed the route and took Mubarak to a dark lane.

"During the entire journey, the driver was continuously on the phone. He alternated between Hindi and Marathi, which I don't understand. But I soon realised that something was wrong," the 70-year-old told Arab News.

Six men dragged him out of the taxi and thrashed him before snatching 87,000 Indian rupees and SR6,000 from him. They abandoned him on the road and drove off.

Two passersby spotted an injured and slightly disoriented Mubarak and alerted the police.

A 40-strong police team was formed which nabbed the driver identified as 31-year-old Bhimrao Ratan Kale, the same man who delivered Mubarak to the gang.

Gang leader Ganesh Pawar, 39, and other suspects were arrested, and part of the cash - Rs 85,000 and 1,900 riyals - was recovered.

Pawar has a history of 44 robbery cases. The Azad Maidan police had externed him for a year in 2014, but he later returned to the city and started a new gang.
