Labourers end strike, resume work at firm

ManamaThe strike staged by the Indian labourers of a company last week near the Indian Embassy here finally ended as the workers resumed their duties.

More than half of the Indian labourers went on a strike protesting against the alleged ill-treatment of the employer.

Speaking to DT News, a company representative claimed that the workers resumed their duties after apologising to the management. “The employees had started the strike due to wrong commitments of some employees, who had vested interests.”

The official confirmed that the workers’ apology was accepted and they were reinstated immediately.

DT News had reported that around 70 workers gathered near the Indian Embassy last Monday, alleging that their sponsor had kicked them out of their accommodations the previous day.

They also claimed that the employer persuaded them to work during the outdoor work ban period in the afternoon.

However, the employer denied the allegations and said that the company had been working in the field of marine services, such as ship repair, maintenance and cleaning services for over 20 years. “We are committed to the labour laws and regulations of Bahrain.”

One of the demands of the workers was salary hike. Meanwhile, the company official informed that the workers had reached the Kingdom six months ago.

“The company will reconsider their salaries at the time of renewing their work contracts,” he added.
