Bahrain company denies sacking of workers

ManamaA private company has denied the allegations of 70 labourers, who claimed yesterday that they were arbitrarily sacked and kicked out of their accommodation.

Around 70 workers gathered yesterday near the Indian Embassy in Adliya, alleging that their sponsor had kicked them out of their accommodation on Sunday.

A company representative told DT News that the workers had arrived in Bahrain six months ago. “They came here as per a work agreement that specified their wages and allowances. They suddenly stopped showing up at work, demanding a salary hike,” he said.

“According to the laws and regulations of the Kingdom of Bahrain, they’re obliged to work as per the recently signed agreement. They were also told that the increase would be considered at the time of the renewal of their contracts,” the company official added.

He also denied the allegations made by the workers, who claimed that they were not paid for working overtime.

“We have been in this field for the past 20 years and we’ve never come across such issues before. We have over 250 staff and 150 in the branch where the issue has emerged. Some of them have resumed work after they were convinced that they’re striking for no valuable reason,” the representative added.

He also informed that the workers haven’t returned to the company’s accommodation after gathering near the embassy yesterday, adding that “they’re wandering ever since.”
