King Hamad in Saudi Arabia for GCC-US summit

Riyadh : His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa has emphasised the importance of constructive global cooperation to overcome challenges and achieve permanent security. HM the King noted that the GCC countries had drawn a well-defined framework for cooperation with the rest of the world based on transparency, credibility and tackling threats.

King Hamad was speaking on his arrival in Riyadh yesterday at the invitation by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud to attend a summit between the GCC leaders and the US President, Barack Obama. A Bahraini delegation is also accompanying him to the summit, to be held today. 

Commenting on the summit, HM the King said, “It reflects outstanding relations between the GCC countries and the US and underlines success of dialogue as an approach on various issues.” 

HM King Hamad exuded confidence that the summit would come up with results that would help handle the grave regional and international challenges. 

Earlier, King Hamad was welcomed by Riyadh Governor Prince Faisal bin Bandar bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, GCC Secretary General Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, Bahraini Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Shaikh Humood bin Abdullah Al Khalifa and senior officials.

Obama, King Salman meet 

US President Barack Obama, who arrived here to attend the summit focused on intensifying the fight against the Islamic State group and resolving the wars in Syria in Yemen, held talks with Saudi Arabia’s King Salman yesterday. 

After landing at King Khalid International Airport in the early afternoon, Obama was taken to the Erga Palace for a meeting with King Salman. They exchanged brief greetings before heading into bilateral talks.

Obama will be joined at the summit by Defence Secretary Ashton Carter and Secretary of State John Kerry. Saudi Arabia and other Gulf nations are part of a US-led coalition that is carrying out air strikes against IS in Syria and Iraq, where the jihadist group has seized swathes of territory.
