THE UNSUNG HEROES OF BAHRAIN

Bahrain has an average of four nurses per 1000 population, when compared to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) average of 8.7 nurses per 100 people.

Head of Nursing & Midwifery at RCSI Bahrain, Professor Seamus Cowman said this during the launch ceremony of a video highlighting the role played by nurses in Bahrain’s healthcare sector and the attractiveness of nursing as a carrer has been released.

“Recruitment and retention of nurses is one of the major challenges for health services across the world. At present in Bahrain we have four nurses per 1000 population whereas the OECD average is 8.7 nurse per 100 population,” Mr. Cowman said.

“I believe this video will greatly assist in promoting a positive image of nursing and an enhanced recruitment strategy,” he added.

The video directed by BSc Nursing Programme Director, Eman Tawesh, a lecturer in nursing, was realized with the participation of students and staff from RCSI Bahrain and Bahrain Defence Forces Hospital (BDF).

According to Tawesh, the video would act as a guideline for students who wish to pursue nursing as a career option. Besides, being helpful for research purposes the video can also be used as a marketing tool for nursing recruitments in Bahrain.

“The video represents a strong collaboration between RCSI Bahrain’s nursing staff and students as well as clinical staff from the BDF hospital. The video will serve as a future recruitment strategy that will hopefully encourage more Bahraini high school students to join the nursing career,” said Mr. Tawash.
