Tobacco duty hike confirmed

The prices of tobacco products and alcohol beverages in Bahrain will definitely increase in the country, as confirmed by a senior State official yesterday.

The official confirmation came as he commented on the reports stating that a customs tax of 200 to 225 pc will be imposed on cigarettes, sheesha molasses (hookah tobacco) and alcohol beverages.

During a press conference following the weekly Cabinet meet yesterday, Parliament and Information Affairs Minister Isa bin Abdulrahman Al Hammadi said, “It’s a decision taken very recently and was endorsed by the concerned Minister.”

“It will be automatically enforced on a number of private merchandise,” said Al Hammadi, without specifying the products included in the decision.

However, the Minister didn’t confirm the percentages of the increment, but he informed that “the decision will be directly implemented on private merchandise.”

The reports claimed that “a circular that was issued by Exits General Director stipulated that a 200 pc tax has been imposed on all tobacco products instead of the 100 pc previous tax, in addition to a 225 pc tax on alcoholic beverages.”
