He added, “My top priority is the health, welfare and well-being of our shipmates as they return to duty.”

DT News reported earlier that the sailors were detained on January 12 on Farsi Island in the Iranian waters of the Arabian Gulf.

The capture was made and announced by the Iranian authorities after the two small patrol boats that the sailors had been taking from Kuwait to Bahrain apparently drifted into the Iranian territorial waters, due to a mechanical malfunction on one of them.

Taking place few hours before the lift of international sanctions on Iran was expected, the incident predicted a new diplomatic crisis between the Islamic Republic and the western world.

owever, diplomatic communications between Foreign Ministers from both sides resulted in the quick release of the detained sailors, who returned safe to Bahrain.

According to the US Navy command, an investigation that was initiated on January 14 is underway.
