Arab Conference on Sport set

ManamaBahrain is all set to embrace another major sporting event as the First Arab Conference on Sport, with the slogan “The Role of Sport in Achieving Sustainable Development Goals,” gets underway today.

More than 200 speakers and guests will engage into discussions in this two-day conference is organised by the Ministry of Youth and Sports Affairs in cooperation with the United Nations Office in Bahrain and the International Council for Health, Physical Education, Sports and Recreation (ICHPER.SD).

Hosted by Art Rotana Amwaj Hotel in Muharraq, the conference commences at 8.30am with the with the opening remarks by Youth and Sports Minister Hisham bin Mohammed Al Jowder, to be followed by a speech by ICHPER.SD representative.

The opening ceremony will also feature an introductory film as well as an operetta, to be followed by a speech from the conference main speaker and Italy’s 2006 World Cup-winning coach Marcello Lippi.

After a short break, today’s first theme will cover the role of sport in implementing social goals for a sustainable development, to be presented by UK’s Dan Powell and Egypt’s Dr Ranya Al Alwani.

Bahrain’s Dr Hashim Hussain and Dr Omar Al Obaidly, as well as Dr Ashraf Sobhi of Egypt will speak at today’s second session, which is about the role of sport in applying economic goals to achieve sustainable development.

Meanwhile, the organizers have put the finishing touches ahead of the conference start, as UN coordinator Amin Al Sharqawi focused on the importance of this event for the UN in its bid to promote sport at the individual level and among communities.

On his part, Hospitality and Accommodation and Transports Committee chairman Ahmed Hussain said the stage with all its facilities have been fully prepared for the sessions, reservations are already confirmed to welcome the participants from abroad, while eight personnel vehicles were allocated to provide transports for the VIP personnel.

Elsewhere, The rest of the delegations have also touched down on Bahrain yesterday, including the Iraqi delegation.

Youth and Sports Affairs Ministry’s Clubs Affairs directorate is pulling significant efforts over the past months to prepare for the conference, as Al Haj, along with Tareq Al Arabi and Feras Al Halwachi and the rest of the team have successfully completed all arrangements in time for the conference kick off.
