Remembrance Day observed

The British Ambassador, Simon Martin, hosted the annual Remembrance Service and Wreath Laying Ceremony in the gardens of the British Embassy yesterday morning.

The Ambassador was joined by members of the diplomatic corps and representatives from the British armed forces, as well as service personnel from several nations and members of the British Community. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Martin said, “This has always been a very special event.

This event provides us with an opportunity to remember the contribution of British and Commonwealth military and civilian servicemen and women involved in the two World Wars and later conflicts”. An additional “Bells for Peace” celebration was held at St Christopher’s Cathedral, as part of an international bell ringing programme to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War.

The day was also observed at St Christopher’s Saar Campus this year. The idea was for students, parents and staff to create their poppies from red card, and “plant” them in a school display. Donations collected will be used to support the Poppy Appeal, the school said in a press release.
