Local anchor’s plea to replace jail term with social service rejected

A judge who has been assigned to replace jail terms with social work has rejected the plea of an anchorman who was sentenced for insulting a former lawmaker.

The defendant, aged 53, was sentenced to three months in prison for insulting ex-MP Mohammed Khalid on his Twitter account.

The case was filed against the defendant by the victim and investigations revealed that the defendant had used a fake Twitter account to defame the ex-MP.

Following investigations, police officers identified that the anchorman was behind the crime and he admitted he was the owner of the account.

The defendant pleaded to get the sentence exchanged with a manual work outside the prison, but his request was met with rejection.

The 53-year-old defendant was earlier sentenced to two months behind bars for attacking a man in Muharraq with a broken bottle because the victim published his image on Instagram and he deemed this act as defamatory.

In this case, however, the judge accepted his request to replace his jail sentence with a manual work.
