Bahrain athletes secure six medals

ManamaBahrain had another golden day yesterday at the fourth edition of the Arab Women Sports Tournament (AWST), being held in Sharjah.

The nationals, represented by Busaiteen Club, showed outstanding performance on the inaugural day of athletics event and captured six medals in total, including three gold, one silver and two bronze amidst stiff competition from other athletes from around the Arab region.

Last night’s outcome boosted Bahrain’s medal tally to 19 medals in total, including seven gold, six silver and six bronze, thus topping the overall standings after the fifth day action.

Hajer Al Amiri opened Bahrain’s account, taking home the 100m gold in 12.25 seconds, beating Omani Mazoon Al Alawiya (12.54) and compatriot Zainab Abdulhussain (13.30), who came second and third, respectively.

The relay team followed suit, crossing the 4x100m finish line first in 50.89 seconds. Algeria (51.04) took the silver and Oman (52.47) the bronze.

Busaiteen’s Marta Herbato added Bahrain a third gold medal of the day in the 800m final, in which she came on top in 2 minutes and 9.84 seconds. Behind her were Algeria’s Nabeela Al Sifi (2:16.00) and Kuwaiti Amal Al Rumi (2:20.02).

Fatuma Juaro (17:53.79) won the 5,000m silver for Busaiteen, finishing behind Algeria’s Ameer Fares (17:50.63), while Kuwait’s Lulua Askar (20:1273) was third.

In the 400m, Busaiteen secured podium after Josephine came third in 1:03.13, with Algeria’s Shaima Wanis (59.09) and compatriot (Sabrine Hussain (1:01:13) sealing a 1-2 finish.

Early on, the Youth and Sports Ministry’s basketball team extended their winning run in the competition and registered their third successive win, beating Kuwait Girls Club 76-66 in one of the most challenging matches for the Bahraini team.

Coached by former international basketball player Fadel Milad, the Bahrainis took firm control on most of the quarters for a well-earned victory. They now have six points from three matches and are the present leaders.

The team was congratulated by Bahrain chef de mission Shaikha Hayat bint Abdulaziz Al Khalifa and Shaikh Isa bin Rashid Al Khalifa after the match.

Bahrain Table Tennis Club clinched their maiden win yesterday, beating Jeddah Club of Saudi Arabia 3-0. The nationals lost their opener 1-3 to Kuwait Girls Club, followed by followed by a 2-3 defeat to Mu’ta Club of Jordan. Bahrain will play Sharjah Club in their fourth match today.

Meanwhile, the shooting events conclude today with the 25m air pistol competition as Bahrain looks to end their participation on a high note.

In volleyball, Muharraq Club will play their third and crucial match today against Morocco at Sharjah Ladies Club hall. The Bahrainis must win this match, should they keep their title hopes alive.
