Code of ethics for health personnel

ManamaThe National Health Regulatory Authority (NHRA) has issued a code of ethics for health professionals, a framework of legal requirements for all members of the health sector in Bahrain.

The code contains 20 rules that govern the work of health professionals, including providing safe care, dealing with negative events, caring in emergency cases, respecting patients, maintaining confidentiality, consent of patients to treatment provided, matters relating to the beginning and end of human life, care for patients with infectious diseases, rules to be followed when referring patients and prescription drugs.

The code also deals with duties towards colleagues, towards the profession, and towards the National Health Regulatory Authority, the use of social media and health advertisements.

“This code was prepared by the National Health Regulatory Authority to serve as an ethical guide for health professionals in the public and private sectors in Bahrain,” Mariam Al Jalahma, the Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Regularity Authority, said.

“It is based on fundamental ethical and professional principles to define the general responsibilities of all health care providers towards their patients, colleagues, profession, themselves and their community at the same time.”
